Benjy Wertheimer, with his wife Heather, is the co-founder of the beloved kirtan duo Shantala; and over the years I’ve come to know him as the kind of guy who decides to stop waiting for the world to change and simply starts to change it. Benjy joins me from Portland, Oregon, where he and his community have been quietly doing something quite extraordinary.
Toucan Tuesday is a project Benjy helped create in Portland — he collects food & supplies weekly for needy neighbors. It embodies what this new season of New World Kirtan is all about – Community as a reason to show up for each other, week after week. He’ll tell us all about it.
We also talk about his moving video Love in Action—a beautiful testament to what happens when devotion meets service—as well as his chant Om Kara Bhajo and the gorgeous video he created to showcase it. The links to both videos are below.
Om Kara Bhajo is a mantra that reminds us the sacred isn’t somewhere else — it is here, it is now, it is us. And that’s what creating community is all about. It’s of us, and for us.
This conversation filled my heart, and I hope the same for you.
